Itinerary and description : Salkantay trek and Machu Picchu
DAY 1 : Cusco – Mollepata – Abra
We leave Cusco on a bus towards the Anta Plateau. We continue up to Huillque pass with its panoramic views of the Vilcabamba Mountain Range.
Then we continue our way towards the warm Limatambo Valley with rich agricultural farming fields. Along the way we will also see local villagers at work and possibly interact with them. After crossing several streams and passing through some bush areas, we reach the impressive trailhead of Soray Pampa, 3,800m (12,460ft).
After lunch, our hike will go to
the high pass Portachuelo and to our campsite, with a beautiful view of
Apu Salcantay, one of the Incas sacred mountains.
DAY 2 : Abra Huayracmachay –
On our accent to the Salkantay Mountain we may see the lively vizcacha, a unique gray Andean rabbit and perhaps see the Andean Condor, the world’s largest flying bird.
After the thrill of reaching the high pass, 4500m (14,763ft), the route descends towards the Andean Valley of Huayracmacchay and along the bank of the Sunchuccata River. On the way down we’ll observe the change from arid highlands to tropical jungle.
Further down, we see the streams
meet to form the Santa Teresa River. We continue along the valley
through the Collpapampa Community 2,900m. (9,530ft) and onto the
DAY 3 : Qollpapampa – Playa
The trail continues along the Santa Teresa River. As we lose altitude, the weather warms but remains at a comfortable temperature.
Finally we arrive to the town
called Playa and to our campsite where there is an opportunity to
interact with the locals and to visit the hot springs of Cocalmayo.
DAY 4 : Playa – Aguas Calientes.
We start our last climb toward the Llactapata pass, with a spectacular panoramic view of the outline of Machu Picchu. Then we descend into the rich tropical Aobamba Valley.
We arrive to catch the train for a 30-minute ride to Aguas Calientes. We’ll overnight in comfortable lodgings at Aguas Calientes town, situated just below the Inca city.
If you like, a late afternoon dip
is possible in the outdoor hot spring baths a few meters from the town.
DAY 5 : Machu Picchu – Cusco
Early in the morning, we’ll catch the bus up to the Inca city of Machu Picchu to enjoy a guided tour or this enigmatic site. After the tour there will be time to wander around and appreciate the beauty and mystery.
Later on, you may choose to climb Wayna Picchu, 2,600m (8,850 ft), the jutting peak overlooking the area. Around mid-afternoon we’ll catch the bus back to the train station for the return trip to Cusco.
