Machu Picchu, view
This Incan Fortress is a Wonder of Humanity and an Andean Paradise.
The Incan town is an Andean paradise. It was constructed by the Inca
Pachacutec between 1400 and 1450 A.D.
It is located between the high Andes and the Amazon jungle, on the
crest of two mountains (Wayna Picchu Mtn., which means young
mountain, and Machu Picchu Mtn., which means old mountain.)
Machu Picchu is a beautiful city of stone. At its height, it housed
a thousand people. Most of these inhabitants were women. (For this
reason, it was considered to be a Temple of the Sun. Nevertheless,
it was a place of recreation and relaxation.)
It is divided into 3 important sectors.
The emphasized sector
is the religious one. This sector includes the major temples: the
Temple of the Sun, the Intiwatana, and the Temple of the 3 Windows.
To the northeast, the urban sector is found. Here there are family
residences, streets, and water installations. Finally, the
agricultural sector encompasses the largest area with its terraces.
